The Z3950 Server of Socrate is a complete and autonomous program which indefinitely processes Z3950 requests transmitted through the Internet by Z3950 clients.
When the Z3950 Server of Socrate receives a request, it runs its search engine into your Socrate 4 Windows library file and builds a Unimarc file which is directly transmitted to the requesting Z3950 client.
A Z3950 client request is a precise instruction to search your catalogue in real time, received through the Internet.
A Z3950 client is a program which formulates real time searches into Socrate and which transforms the answers of the Socrate Z3950 Server into Unimarc files.
The Z3950 client can then convert the contents of the Unimarc file into other formats such as a web page in order to show the search results and/or import them into another library catalogue.
